International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) will be given the Nobel Peace Prize of 2017

2017年のノーベル平和賞は、International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons 　(ICAN: 核兵器廃絶国際キャンペーン)が10月6日に受賞が発表された。授賞理由は核兵器の使用がもたらす壊滅的な人道上の結果に注意を向けさせた働きおよび、条約による核兵器禁止の実現に向けた多大なる尽力した。 ICANは世界およそ100か国のNGOによる連合であり、核兵器廃絶に向けた「人道の誓い」に賛同するよう世界の国々を動かす力になった。さらに2017年7月7日に122か国の賛成で採択された核兵器禁止条約については、ICANが市民社会での主導的な役割を担った。条約の発効には50か国以上の批准が必要となるが、既に 50か国以上が署名している。署名した各国は批准に向けて国内手続きを進めることになる。 ノルウェーノーベル委員会では、条約が核兵器を1つでも減らすことのできるものではなく、核兵器保有国やその同盟国が条約に賛成していないことを指摘したうえで、核兵器廃絶の取り組みは保有国も含めて進めていくべきだ。

一方で、アメリカやロシアなどの核兵器の保有国や、核の傘の日本などは条約に参加しない。
