長崎原子爆弾が炸裂した爆心地から北方約3.6kmの道ノ尾駅が、長崎市内が壊滅して長崎本線の終点となった。翌日の1945年8月10日の午後2時頃には、駅周辺には次々に搬入された膨大な被爆者や死傷者が集結した。約5〜6kmも長崎市内から被爆して全身を火傷した瀕死の少年たちがリヤカー上でやっと道ノ駅まで辿りついた。
