The numerous victims of the Hiroshima atomic bomb were transferred to the temporary prefectural hospital converted from the remained Kusatsu National School.

広島原子爆弾により西に約4.5kmの草津国民学校(現在の広島市立本川小学校)の校舎は全壊と全焼を免れて残存した。県立病院が全焼し焼失したため9月から草津国民学校が臨時県立病院となった。10月頃には西方の廿日市方面の被爆者も移送された。草津国民学校の校舎は約3,000人もの収容所にもなった。
