広島原子爆弾の炸裂後から、第1陸軍病院宇品分院には次々と多数の被爆者が護送された。他の救護所からも多くの被爆者らが移送された。炸裂して3日後の8月9日には宇品分院の講堂内にも被爆者が満杯に収容された。宇品分院は、当面は原子爆弾の専門病院として機能した。
